I recently upgraded Citrix Receiver 4.7 to Citrix Workspace App 1904 and came across this issue: when logging in the following error occurred:

I’ve blurred the driver name in parentheses because it can be different in your case. In our case the driver was called RESWSL. I never heard of this driver and neither did google (it’s probably RES ONE WorkSpace Licensing). I did find Citrix Knowledge base article CTX238932 where this error was featured. It pointed my attention to registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECitrixICA ClientEngineConfigurationAdvancedModulesICA 3.0.

The Citrix Workspace app allows for secure, unified access to all of your SaaS apps, web apps, virtual apps, files, and desktops. Im using citrix secure gateway version 3.3.5 and citrix webinterface version 5.4.2.5 Citrix Secure gateway is setup with protocol TLSv1.0, TLSv1.1 and TLSv1.2 and cipher suite GOV. Citrix Xenapp 6.5 is installed in Windows 2008 R2 server with service pack 1 installed spanish version and hotfixes. It is an optional download, provided on an as-is basis by Citrix to serve as an example. Before use, IT administrators must customize the scripts to suit their environment. The uninstall and install scripts may be used as noted in the upgrade guide for Citrix Workspace app for Windows. Version: 21.3.1.25 (2103.1) Checksums.

Starting with Version 1904, Microsoft Visual C Redistributable installer is packaged with the Citrix Workspace app installer. During Workspace app installation, the installer checks whether the Microsoft Visual C Redistributable package is present on the system and installs it if necessary.

However, even though my VirtualDriverEx registry value was indeed empty my error couldn’t be fixed by correcting it’s data. Then I noticed that the VirtualDriver registry value contained a list of drivers that corresponded with the sub keys of the Modules key (parent of the ICA 3.0 key). All but one: RESWSL. I removed the missing driver from the list and presto! All was well again.

In conclusion: if you come across this error after upgrading your Receiver/Workspace App check the driver mentioned in parentheses in the VirtualDriver registry value. If it doesn’t have a matching key in Modules simply remove it and you’re good to go. Or you can find a client that hasn’t been updated and still has the corresponding Module registry key and copy it over.

PS. If you’re on a 64-bit OS make sure to use the WOW6432Node software key
