If you own a Land Rover, there are some questions that might interest you whether you are facing any of these issues or you might face some day. Knowing the answers might save you a big deal of money and time.

To keep my R380 in excellent condition, what oil should I use?

Taking good care of your gearbox is absolutely important and so, MTF94 is highly recommended especially for the R380 gearbox.

The R380 gearbox was introduced in approx 1995 with the suffix J and has now evolved to the suffix L and this has been used until the end of the Disco 2's and until 2007 in the Defender when the 2.4 TDCi engine was introduced which uses the MT82. The R380 5 speed all synchromesh gearbox comprises an input shaft, output shaft, layshaft and reverse idler shaft. Gearbox casings consist of a front cover, gearcase, centre plate and extension housing, all casings are located by dowels and sealed.

What do I need to replace my LT95 4-speed manual with a 5-speed?

If you are so determined to do this, then you will be needing:

  • LT230 with handbrake, with Hi/Low and differential lock linkages
  • LT77 or R380 with bell housing
  • Clutch kit, shifters and mounts

Why have I lost all drive on my 300 TDI Defender/Disco with R380 5-speed manual gearbox?

Some of the owners have faced this issue and there are three possible problems

  1. The worn away main shaft spline, which doesn’t engage in the transfer case input gear, (the most common one)
  2. The main shaft has sheared just inside the rear of the gearbox
  3. The clutch friction plate has been torn out by the centre

Here it is important to know that to fix the cause 1 and 2, you will require a rebuilt unit.

The third and fourth shifts are not very good after having my Defender fitted with a rebuilt gearbox. Why?

The gearstick bolts to the “turret” and most of the rebuilt gearboxes usually come without it. When you pull back the rubber boot on the turret, two large springs and two adjuster screws with locknuts are revealed.

These springs and screws are responsible of setting the rest position of the gear stick when you let it go. In case of having fit a new gearbox, sometimes a little adjustment is required to ensure a clean gearshift.

The first thing you need to do is to drive the vehicle and when shifting into 3 and 4, instead of letting the gearstick go, try to hold it a little to the left then a little to the right.

It will drop in nicely one way or the other, after that, comes the second part. Adjust the springs and screws resting on to lean the gearstick right or left until you feel it is shifting better.
